Allegory of the Cave, 2013, Digital video

February 4, 2014

A web version of the video work is now live! You will be able to see what I see during the process of making two 1700 X 950 paintings. To get the best view enter full screen and change the settings to 1080p HD.

The video is made from still images of two 1700 X 950 mm paintings in the exhibition at various stages of completion. The subject matter is the exhibition space and furniture at 30 Upstairs.

The music by Carolyn Ayson (BMus, MMusTher) is composed from instrumental and electronic sound as well as site specific recordings of the regular sounds heard at 30 Upstairs.

This video was part of the exhibition "World Of Forms", 26 September - 19 October 2013. The exhibition also included four paintings and four drawings that were a result of a residency at 30 Upstairs, May 20 - July 14, 2013.

The exhibition highlighted the process of painting to destabilize the illusion of permanence and challenge the end paintings as being the primary goal. Also looking at how the constant state of change a painting undergoes during the making and remaking process can reflect this constant process in our own lives.
